LaGuardia Community College Library is providing financial and investor education to college students and the wider community using Open Educational Resources (OER). OER is a term given to “teaching, learning, and research materials that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation, and redistribution” (2012 Paris OER Declaration). This project empowers under-served groups, on their own terms, to make informed financial choices. To ensure that the OER and grant-supported educational experiences reflect participants’ lived experiences, all learning resources are shaped in collaboration with LaGuardia students who come from diverse backgrounds and speak and write in a language other than English (namely, Spanish, Creole, Tibetan, Bengali, Chinese, Punjabi, or Tagalog). The project gives particular attention to the challenges experienced by lower-income households when living in high-cost urban areas.

Because the program focuses on English language learners, the lessons break down challenging financial language and use authentic learning materials, interactive websites, and other media to help participants work through real-life financial scenarios. The library is offering simultaneous financial literacy programming for children, thereby meeting childcare needs for participating families.
